PUTTING up illegal structures on road reserves, a phenomenon that has been observed in all parts of the country, poses safety risks to road users.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Road Authority (RA), Conrad Lutomb, made this observation during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Onamafila road in the Ohangwena Region on Thursday.
He stressed that no one is allowed to create and or use any “makeshift accesses” to a national road.
He then urged regional and community leaders to join the RA in reprimanding and reporting the perpetrators to the regional offices for action.
Lutombi also encouraged road users to help keep the national road network clean.
“Please whenever you are on the road, be the agents of change and encourage other road users to not throw rubbish on or along national roads, but to make use of designated rubbish bins,” he said.
Minister of Works and Transport John Mutorwa said road reserves are not meant to punish anybody, but to ensure easy expansion of roads when the number of vehicles increases in a specific area or town.
Mutorwa stated that proclaimed public roads generally have a road reserve width measured 30 metres to either side of the road centreline.
He added that the reserves of these roads fall under the jurisdiction of the Roads Authority.
