Africa-Press – Namibia. KINDA Promotions will host a development boxing tournament, the ‘Night of Prospects’ bonanza at the Nampower Convention Centre on 6 August.
Kinda, who announced the tournament at a press conference in Windhoek yesterday, said there will be a total of nine fights on the card, featuring some promising up-and-coming boxers.
In the main bout, Jona ‘King of the Ring’ Shikukutu will take on Reinhold ‘Bulldozer’ Matheus in a super featherweight fight over eight rounds.
Shikukutu only has four professional fights to his name, of which he has won two, drawn one and lost one.
Despite his relative inexperience, the 26-year-old is a promising prospect, who drew his last fight two months ago against Lazarus Shaningwa, who was unbeaten in six fights before they met.
Shikukutu should start as the favourite against Matheus, who has only won one fight and lost three to date.
The other boxers are all inexperienced, with several making their pro debuts, but Kinda tipped some of them to become household names in the near future.
“I have faith in them and that’s why I feel positive about promoting them.
I just want the nation to come and watch because at least two or three of them will become future champions,” he said.
At the same occasion, Fillemon Neputa, the director of Kumika Fisheries, announced a sponsorship of N$160 000 for the bonanza.
“It’s an honour to be able to contribute to the young talent in our country and to be part of promoting sport. We got involved in the tournament because we want to plough back into the community and especially towards youth development,” he said.
“Sport is one of the catalysts that can propel development and ensure that we put Namibia’s name on the map. With boxing being a sport that Namibians are very good at, we saw it fit to get involved in this event,” he added.
Tickets for the bonanza cost N$200 per person, while companies can book tables for 10 people at N$15 000 per table.
