Africa-Press – Namibia. WINDHOEK Old Boys swept to the top of the men’s log in the BDO Wanderers Hockey Night League after two emphatic victories over the past week.
Last Thursday they beat Masters 7-2 and followed that up with an impressive 8-0 victory against DTS on Wednesday to replace Wanderers at the top of the log on 21 points.
Old Boys’ strength in depth became apparent as their second team also recorded two comprehensive victories to move up to second position on 19 points, after beating Wanderers II 10-0 on Tuesday and NUST 7-0 on Wednesday.
Wanderers have now dropped down to third position on 17 points, while School of Excellence are fourth on 10 and should secure the final playoff spot ahead of Masters, who are also on 10 points, but with an inferior goal aggregate.
On Wednesday, Old Boys gave a stunning performance as they raced into an early 3-0 lead against DTS.
The match had barely started when Dian La Cock found the net with a backstick shot after a fine throughball by Ernest Jacobs.
Old Boys continued to launch some blistering attacks and with Matu Kavikairiua scoring two goals within two minutes, they went 3-0 ahead after only four minutes.
Further goals in the second quarter by Nathan van Niekerk, Petri Burger and Dian La Cock from a short corner put Old Boys 6-0 ahead by half time to put the result beyond doubt.
DTS provided stiffer resistance after the break but seldom threatened, while Kavikairiua completed his hat-trick and Ernest Jacobs also got on the scoresheet to complete a resounding 8-0 victory for Old Boys.
Earlier on Wednesday, WOB II beat NUST 7-0 to move up to second place.
Their evergreen striker Siabonga Martins led the way with four goals, while Bucko Bartlett, Tyler Adkins and Riaan Kruger also scored as they completed their league campaign in second position.
DTS, meanwhile, finished on top of the women’s log after a hard fought 1-0 victory against their closest rivals Windhoek Old Boys on Wednesday.
In an evenly-matched game of few chances, Celine Morkel scored the winning goal when she was on hand to stab a loose ball into the net following a quick counter-attack by Anthea Coetzee.
Jivanka Kruger created some chances for Old Boys, while Kaela Schimming and Wilri van Taak came close, but DTS held on for their victory which saw them completing their campaign at the top of the log on 19 points.
Old Boys are second on 18 points, but they can replace DTS at the top if they win their final match against their second team.
WOB II (8 points), School of Excellence (5) and Wanderers (4) each have a match remaining and will battle it out for the final two playoff spots.
