Africa-Press – Namibia. NAMIBIAN Gymnastics and its president Sonja Olivier lost its case against the Namibia Sports Commission, the Namibia National Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service on Thursday when the Namibian High Court ruled that it did not have locus standi, or was not legally recognised.
Olivier had claimed that Namibian Gymnastics was the sole and authentic body of gymnastics in Namibia, but the High Court ruled against her, saying that Namibian Gymnastics did not have any legal standing.
The president of the NNOC Abner Xoagub welcomed the judgement.
“We are happy that justice has been served – integrity and ethics in sports governance is key. The athletes are the focus of our mission as the Olympic movement in Namibia. There is only one recognised federation responsible for gymnastics in Namibia and that is the Namibia Gymnastics Federation,” he said.
The Namibia Gymnastics Federation said it would issue a press release in due course, and that it will engage with the International Gymnastics Federation, the FIG, so that Namibia’s two gymnasts Shayna Schutte and Emilia Ekandjo can still be cleared to participate at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
