The public must not recklessly dispose of guns and ammunition but rather hand them over to the police, Khomas police commander commissioner Ismael Basson said.
He made these comments after the detonation of 40mm rifle grenades, which were found in a riverbed 10km away from the Kupferberg roadblock by a passer-by, yesterday.
The explosives are of South African origin.
Basson said the grenades were highly explosive, hence the need to detonate them immediately.
He assured the public that the area was cleared and is safe.
The public are, however, advised to be cautious when handling guns and ammunition, which are very dangerous, not only to humans, but to the environment as well.
