Africa-Press – Namibia. NAMIBIA’s national men’s tennis team managed to remain in Group III of the African Davis Cup tournament, after finishing fourth overall at the Davis Cup qualifying tournament in Algiers, Algeria over the past week.

With the top three teams being promoted to Group II, Namibia also had a chance of bring promoted, but lost 2-1 to Zimbabwe in their third-place playoff match on Saturday to remain in Group III.

Namibia opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory against Kenya on Wednesday, 10 August.

Namibia’s top singles player Connor van Schalkwyk, who is still only 17 years old, beat Albert Njogu 6-1, 6-1, while his 20-year-old brother Codie van Schalkwyk lost 7-5, 6-3 to Kael Shalin Shah.

In the doubles the Van Schalkwyk brothers beat Keean Shah and Derick Ominde 7-6, 6-2.

The following day Namibia beat the host nation Algeria 2-1.

In the singles, Connor van Schalkwyk beat Toufik Sahtali in a tough three-setter that nearly lasted three and a half hours, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.

Algeria drew level when Rayan Ghedjemis beat Codie van Schalkwyk 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in the second singles match.

The tie went down to the doubles, that also went to three sets before the Van Schalkwyk brothers clinched the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

That saw Namibia joining Morocco at the top of Pool B and the two nations battled it out for top spot on Friday, 12 August, but Morocco dominated the tie, winning all three matches.

Yassine Dlimi beat Connor van Schalkwyk 7-5, 6-2; Adam Moundir beat Codie van Schalkwyk 6-1, 6-3; and Walid Ahouda and Mehdi Benchakroun beat Codie van Schalkwyk and Steyn Dippenaar 7-6, 6-3 in the doubles.

That win saw Morocco finishing on top of Pool B and gaining automatic promotion to Group II next year, where they will be joined by the Ivory Coast, who finished on top of Pool A.

Namibia, who finished second in Pool B, then took on Zimbabwe, who finished second in Pool A, in the third place play-off match on Saturday, with the winner also gaining promotion to Africa Group II.
