Africa-PressNamibia. SWAPO party candidate, Kampota Michael Shiwana, has once against been declared councillor of the Ndonga Linena constituency following a recount ordered by the Electoral Court.

This is despite the ruling party announcing at the start of the week that it will not be taking part in the recount of the Kavango East elections, citing that the process is tainted with corrupt practices and such, a complete rerun of the elections is needed. Shiwana bagged 1 094 votes out of the 2 386 votes casted, with only 20 ballots rejected.

Djami Balthazar Daniel of the All People’s Party (APP) came in close second with 1 074 votes, the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) candidate Shipapo Kassian Kayeya received 146 votes, while the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) candidate Kashera Patrick Shiyemo received 72 votes.

The recount exercise was conducted in compliance with an Electoral Court ruling handed down on 13 September, in the matter between APP versus the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN).

In the matter, the Electoral Court declared the results of the Regional Council Elections for the Ndonga Linena constituency that took place on 27 November 2020 null and void.

Chief Electoral Officer, Theo Mujoro, added that the Commission was ordered by the Electoral Court to recount the votes cast in the Regional Councils Elections for the Ndonga Linena at a secure and convenient place in Windhoek, with the process to be done no later than 10 calendar days from the date of the court order.

“The successful completion of the recount exercise bears testimony to Namibia’s robust electoral system and the ECN’s commitment to upholding the values of transparency, professionalism and integrity,” he concluded.
