SAINTS maintained their unbeaten start to the Bank Windhoek Outdoor Hockey Men’s Premier League on Sunday, but they were pushed all the way before beating the School of Excellence 2-1.
Aiden Landry gave Saints an early lead when he scored from a quick counter attack, but SoE had chances of their own with the Handura brothers Delron and Giovanni, and Baggio Karigub all prominent in attack.
At the other end Owen Hatton created some chances for Saints with his surging runs through the midfield while they also won a few short corners, but it was only at the start of the final quarter that they managed to increase their lead when Fagan Hansen finished off an attack by Ludwig van Rooyen.
SoE pushed hard in the final stages and their persistence paid off when they won a penalty which Karigub put away, but it was too little too late as Saints held on for the win.
It was their second win of the season after they beat Windhoek Old Boys 3-2 on 12 August, and they now lead the log on six points.
Old Boys, meanwhile, rebounded from that defeat in style when they thumped DTS 6-1 on Friday night.
Their veteran striker Bucko Bartlett opened the scoring with a breakaway field goal after six minutes, while three goals in the second quarter gave them a commanding 4-0 half time lead. Bartlett and Dian La Cock both scored from short corners, while Tyler Adkins added a field goal.
Ernest Jacobs made it 5-0 from a short corner, while Bartlett completed his hat-trick with a field goal, before Ronaldo Ganeb scored a late consolation field goal for DTS.
That bonus point win put Old Boys second on four points, while SoE are third on three after beating Wanderers 3-0 on 17 August, with Delron Handura scoring two field goals and Christiaan Festus one.
Saints also got off to a good start in the Women’s Premier League after thumping Wanderers 6-0 on Friday.
Wanderers managed to keep Saints at bay until the second quarter, before three goals in three minutes by Gina Olles, Tara Myburgh and Rachel Finch put Saints firmly in charge.
Azaylee Philander made it 4-0 with another field goal, while two goals in quick succession by Jerrica Cormack from a short corner, and Myburgh’s second, completed a comprehensive victory.
In the Men’s First Division, Old Boys stormed to the top of the log with an emphatic 11-0 victory against Wanderers.
PD Blignaut and Hannes von Wielligh both scored hat-tricks and Riaan Kruger and Willie Serfontein two goals each to put Old Boys at the top of the log on four points, while Saints and Masters, who both recorded victories last week, are a point behind.
In the Women’s First Division, Saints and Wanderers are both on seven points at the top of the log after recording victories over the weekend.
Saints beat NUST 7-0, with Abigail Rowles scoring a hat-trick and Camilla Karuhumba two goals, while Wanderers picked up two wins, beating Old Boys 4-2 and SoE 1-0.
Against Old Boys, Maryke Short and Leandrie Mostert each scored two goals, while Catriona Januarie and Marne Meyer replied for WOB, and against SoE, while Mostert scored the winning goal against SoE.
