NamPower tower collapses due to theft

Africa-Press – Namibia. A tower that fell on the Omburu-Khan power line yesterday afternoon is suspected to be a result of vandalism.

NamPower spokesperson Irene Hoaes said the illegal removal of the stay wires compromised the support of the tower and resulted in its collapse.

“No power interruption was experienced due to the trip of the Omburu – Khan 2 220 kV circuit.

This specific line is one of the transmission lines which supply the coastal area,” she said.

Hoaes said upon inspection of the line, it was discovered that the supporting stay wires on the power line were removed.

“The collapse of the tower resulted in a veld fire which was subsequently extinguished.

Non-adherence to safe distances and clearances around electricity infrastructure can result in hazards, injury, or electrocution,” she said.

NamPower’s Eschell Kandjii said a case of theft has been opened at the Usakos police station.

“There were some parts of the power line that were stolen. Somebody removed them on the line, which caused the tower to fall,” he said.

Kandjii said at the moment they are not aware of any suspects and would like to engage the community to be on the look out for those removing the wires.

NamPower urged the public to treat all wires and infrastructure as dangerous during any such incidents.
