Egg production threatened due to cheap imports

Africa-PressNamibia. THE poultry industry in Namibia, specifically egg producers, is currently facing headwinds due to cheap imported eggs. The Namibia Agriculture Union (NAU), in a statement said the imported eggs have been flooding both the formal and informal market, as they are sold way below the market value, which hampers the sustainability of local egg producers’ businesses.

According to the NAU, this has put immense pressure and created local surplus resulting in a drop in pricing that is not sustainable for egg producers.

The long-term impact of overflooding of imports would force producers out of production and especially small-scale producers will be impacted as already seen in the dairy sector. The NAU lastly said that urgent measures are required to either support production or protect producers.
