WINDHOEK Afrikaanse Privaat Skool and Windhoek High School were crowned the Namibian schools hockey champions after winning the boys and girls finals on Saturday evening.
In the u19 boys final, Affies beat Windhoek Gymnasium 2-1 on penalties after the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of full time, while WHS beat St Paul’s College 2-1 in the u19 girls final.
The boys final was a thriller, that once again went down to the wire, after Affies had also beaten Gymnasium on penalties earlier in the year in the Gravity Cup final.
Playing at Windhoek Gymnasium’s packed Aloe Park, Gymnasium took an early lead when Matthew Lassen stabbed in a long cross into the box after barely two minutes.
Affies took a while to get into the game, but came close when Christiaan du Raan broke into the box but flicked over the crossbar, while Jandre Smit’s backstick shot went narrowly wide.
Gymnasium stepped up the tempo in the second half and nearly went further ahead when Owen Hatton’s backstick shot hit the crossbar, while Affies keeper Richter van Rooyen saved an effort by Isaac Fallis.
The momentum, however, swung to Affies, and after winning two short corners in quick succession, they finally equalised when they won a penalty for a foul in the box and Ludwig van Rooyen scored from the spot.
In a frantic final quarter, Gymnasium’s Kieron Christ cleared a shot by Jandre Smit off the line, but Affies kept on attacking and Smit put them 2-1 ahead when he scrambled in a loose ball in the box.
Gymnasium, however, immediately struck back through a great deflected goal by Jack Fourie off Hatton’s cross, to tie the match at 2-all and send it into a penalty showdown.
The opposing goalies, Richter van Rooyen of Affies and Dewald la Grange of Gymnasium saved the first few efforts before Gerhard Myburgh opened Affies’ account.
Lassen pulled a goal back for Gymnasium, but Ludwig van Rooyen’s goal put Affies 2-1 ahead before his brother Richter, saved from Hatton to give Affies a riveting victory.
The girls final was a close affair although WHS can thank their keeper Jamie Henckert for their victory.
St Pauls had more possession and chances, but could not get past an inspired Henckert who pulled off numerous fine saves.
WHS took the lead through a field goal by Marlene Coetzee at the end of the first quarter, and after several efforts, Azaylee Philander finally equalised for St Paul’s from a short corner midway in the second quarter.
WHS, however, had the final say when Milah Malan scored from a short corner midway through the third quarter.
