Africa-Press – Namibia. WANDERERS and WHS Old Boys continued to set the pace as both recorded emphatic victories in Cricket Namibia’s Premier League over the weekend.
At the Wanderers field, Wanderers beat MR24/7 Welwitschia by eight wickets after comfortably reaching the winning target of 117 for the loss of only two wickets, while Old Boys beat CCD by 84 runs at the CCD field after scoring 191 and then dismissing CCD for 107.
Welwitschia won the toss and elected to bat, but they were soon in trouble as Wanderers’ bowlers gained the upper hand.
Dewald Nel dismissed both Welwitschias openers cheaply with Vincent Murapo going for 9 and Markus Haihambo for 3, and when Erich von Mollendorf (8) and Simon Shikongo (12) were dismissed in quick succession, they were struggling at 40/4.
Renier Bosman revived Welwitschias’ innings, scoring 26, while Salomon Nuuyoma added 30 not out off 33 balls, but wickets continued to fall all around them before the whole side was out for 116.
Karl Birkenstock was Wanderers’ top bowler, taking four wickets for 43 runs off 10 overs, while Danie van Schoor took 2/4 off two overs and Bernard Scholtz 2/24 off seven overs.
Wanderers’ openers Niko Davin and JC Balt wasted little time in chasing down the target as they put on 65 for the first wicket off only six overs before Balt was dismissed for 10.
Davin raced to 65 off 38 balls (9×4, 3×6), before being bowled by Ado Iita, but Birkenstock (15 not out) and Lohan Louwrens (8 not out) took them to the winning target off only 11,4 overs.
At the CCD field, WHS Old Boys won the toss and elected to bat, but got off to a poor start as CCD’s bowlers grabbed some early wickets.
Ben Shikongo started the slide, bowling Shaun Fouche for 4, before Mauritius Ngupita took over, dismissing Gerhard Erasmus (10), Zane Green (0) and Gerhard Janse van Rensburg (4) in quick succession to leave them struggling at 43 for four wickets.
Divan La Cock and Ruben Trumpelmann, however, revived their innings with a 72-run partnership before Pikky Ya France bowled La Cock for 43, which came off 62 balls and included four fours and one six.
Trumpelmann continued to lead Old Boys’ revival with a fine knock but he received little support and was eventually the last man out for 82 off 106 balls (7×4, 4×6) with the total on 191.
Ngupita was CCD’s best bowler, taking four wickets for 33 off 10 overs, while Pikkie Ya France took 3/42 and Tawanda Sithole 2/33.
In reply, CCD’s batsmen never got going as they lost wickets at regular intervals.
Ryan Moffet was dismissed early on for three, while Stephan Baard (17) and Joshuan Julius (4) were dismissed in quick succession as CCD slumped to 32/3.
Ya France (17), Nicol Loftie-Eaton (16) and Ngupita (24 not out) gave CCD brief hope, but Old Boys’ bowlers turned on the screws with regular wickets before dismissing the whole side for 107 off 37,4 overs to complete a comfortable 84-run victory.
Erasmus was Old Boys’ top bowler, taking 4/19 off 10 overs, while Trumpelmann took 2/6 off five, and Tangeni Lungameni 2/19 off seven overs.
Wanderers now lead the log on eight points, followed by Old Boys on six, and CCD on four, although the latter has a game in hand.
