Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Minister of Works and Transport, John Mutorwa, and Botswana’s Minister of Transport and Public Works, Eric Molale, recently reaffirmed their commitment to the development of the Trans-Kalahari Railway (TKR) Project.

According to the ministers, there is a need to accelerate the implementation of the TKR Project to promote trade and tourism in the two countries. The ministers emphasised that this needs to be done with the goal of creating employment and alleviating poverty in both countries.

For this reason, the ministers reaffirmed the commitment of their respective ministries to the project. In this regard, Mutorwa and Molale resolved to capacitate the project as a matter of urgency.

They also decided to establish a technical team from TransNamib, Botswana Railways and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen the project and advance the project activities. A resolution was also made to approve the operational budget of the project for the last quarter of the 2022/2023 financial year.

These resolutions were made during a meeting that took place on 30 November. The goal of the meeting was for the two ministers to discuss future developments of the project. This meeting followed the meetings of the Joint Technical and Joint Steering committees, which took place on 28 and 29 November respectively.

The Trans-Kalahari Railway line route will start at Botswana’s Mmamabula to Rasesa, north of Molepolole, towards Phuduhudu. The line will follow the Trans-Kalahari Highway to the Mamuno Border Post into Namibia, where it will pass via the Buitepos border into Gobabis through Omitara to Okahandja and Walvis Bay.
