Africa-Press – Namibia. NAMIBIA were lying eighth out of ten nations before the final day of competition at the Region 5 Youth Games in Lilongwe, Malawi yesterday.
With ten Southern African nations competing in the multi-sport event, South Africa had taken a decisive lead with a total of 111 medals consisting of 61 gold, 28 silver and 22 bronze medals, followed by Zambia with a total of 61 medals (17 gold, 25 silver and 19 bronze) and Angola with a total of 44 medals (17 gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze).
Zimbabwe had a total of 84 medals, but only followed in fourth position due to their 12 gold medals (they also had 24 silver and 48 bronze medals), while Botswana were fifth with a total of 47 medals (12 gold, 22 silver, 13 bronze).
They were followed by Malawi with a total of 44 medals (9 gold, 11 silver, 24 gold) and Lesotho (8 gold, 7 silver and 1 bronze), while Namibia were eighth with a total of 39 medals (7 gold, 12 silver and 20 bronze).
Eswatini with a total of five medals (all gold) and Mozambique with a total of 17 medals (4 gold, 2 silver, 11 bronze) were at the bottom of the table.
Most of Namibia’s medals came in athletics where they finished fifth after winning 6 gold, 8 silver and 5 bronze medals.
Lahja Iipinge was Namibia’s star performer winning three gold medals in the T12 para-athletics category in the 100m, 200m and 400m track events.
Christine Mutumbi won gold in the girls 400m hurdles, while Nanyukweni Frans won gold in the girls 1 500m.
Namibia’s only other gold medal came in boxing where Alfeus Modino won the final of the 63,5kg category.
Namibia also won four other bronze medals in boxing through Monika Kambonde, Lusia Hifikwa, Thomas Ishidimbwa and Richard Hubertus.
The only other code where Namibia won medals came in swimming where they won four silver and 11 bronze medals.
In netball, Namibia finished fifth after beating Botswana 46-39 in the fifth and sixth-place play-off match.
During the group stages, Namibia also beat Botswana 37-31, but drew 43-43 to Zimbabwe and lost 42-39 to Malawi, 50-41 to Zambia and 61-23 to South Africa.
In football, both Namibia’s boys and girls teams lost all their matches.
The boys lost 2-1 to Malawi and 1-0 to Botswana, while the girls were thumped 12-0 by both South Africa and Malawi.
