Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Development Bank of Namibia (DBN) donated N$500 000 for the construction of two new classrooms at the Maunge School in the Zambezi Region.

During the handover, DBN’s Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Jerome Mutumba, said that the provision of suitable education facilities is important because it provides an environment where young minds can focus on learning in a comfortable setting, free from distractions.

He emphasised that education is one of the most important resources for the future and rural development is essential to the government. Governmental organisations, he urged, must therefore play a role in the development of rural areas, which includes the improvement of education facilities.

According to the school’s principal, Susan Museke, the new classrooms will contribute to the improvement of learner attendance at the school. However, she added that more needs to be done to improve the school’s conditions as teachers and learners still have to use tents and mud structures. Museke therefore called on other institutions to also make donations that can improve conditions at the school.

These sentiments were also echoed by the Area Induna, Pex Isiah, who requested additional assistance for the construction of more classrooms. Isiah also asked donors to assist with the electrification of new classrooms and teachers’ residences.

DBN generally allocates a portion of its revenue to corporate social investments to support initiatives that cannot sustain commercial finance. Besides education, the bank also makes investments in skill development, community safety, health, poverty alleviation, enterprise development as well as environmental and biodiversity management.
