Swakop gets beach 'chill' spot

Africa-Press – Namibia. UNTIL Friday, a ‘chill spot’ for people who just want to hang out and braai with friends and family on the beach has had to contend with municipal restrictions and contentious residents.

But this changed with the official inauguration of the North Beach recreational facility near Platz am Meer Waterfront Mall and Paddok Gardens.

The N$2,5 million recreational area comprises a kiosk, ablution and shower facilities, lifesavers’ room, braai stands and a fenced off playground.

Six lifesavers from the Namibian Navy will be available to ensure the safety of all those making use of the beach area around the facility.

Swakopmund mayor Dina Namubes on Friday said the municipal council has received countless applications from residents and visitors to host a variety of events along the beach – particularly during the festive season.

“Users always compete for the best sites or spots, which could lead to conflict and disagreements.

In the past allegations of favouritism were made when the council allocated sites for events,” she said, adding that the situation was aggravated by the absence of a beach access plan that designates zones for specific recreational activities.

“The purpose of this plan is to effectively manage and control recreational activities that take place on the beach,” she said. To control crowding at one venue for numerous activities, and to clearly identify which location is designated for a specific activity, such a plan will be utilised as a guide for decision-making, which in turn will simplify the application and approval processes for residents.
