Africa-Press – Namibia. POPULAR Democratic Movement (PDM) member of parliament Inna Hengari says the answer to Namibia’s education challenges is better teacher training.

Hengari says this will save Namibia from becoming an illiterate nation.

This comes after the Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate results released by the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture on Friday was characterised by a high failure rate.

Hengari said this confirms that nothing has changed in Namibian schools as far as the skills of teachers is concerned.

She said until the government and specifically the education ministry realises that improving the training of junior primary school teachers is the only way to “fix” the education system, it “will continue on this headlong slide into illiteracy”.

There is also a need to solidify the education sector’s foundation, she said, while bemoaning the high rate of failure in English and emphasising the need for vocational education to be prioritised.
