NANSO speaks up about NSSCO/NSSCAS results

Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Namibia National Students Organisation (NANSO) has called on all Namibians to recommit themselves to supporting the education ministry’s efforts in

delivering on its promise to the children of Namibia.

The call comes after the country recorded a low performance rate in the 2022 NSSCAS and NSSCO results.

NANSO president Lucia Ndishishi said an investment in education is not a mere expenditure or a cause for charity, but an investment in the future of a Namibian child.

Ndishishi said that the results reflect the country’s collective effort, and their improvement will, still, require a collective effort.

In 2021, 46 977 candidates were examined at NSSCO level, however, the figure dropped to 38 019 candidates in 2022, a difference of almost 9 000.

“It must never be accepted as normal that of the 38 019 candidates who wrote the NSSCO examinations, only 5 812 qualify to enrol at institutions of higher learning, or that 8 133 qualify to proceed to NSSCAS level,” she said.

Ndishishi added that the magnitude of this matter cannot be overstated, nor can it be ignored by the highest levels of government.

As such, NANSO expects and in the strongest terms, urges Cabinet, particularly through the Office of the Prime Minister, to convene a high-level technical and intervening committee, which must be tasked with Government’s overall response to the matter.

“We do not want more educational conferences or workshops, we have had enough that provide an adequate outlook of the issues, and what needs to be done about them,” she added.

She indicated that what is needed is a strong and diverse technical committee constituted of government, educationalists, teachers’ union representatives, independent policy advisors and NANSO.

This committee will provide clear and urgent direction on an accounting of the significant reduction in the number of candidates who sat for the NSSCO examination in 2022.

Further, Ndishishi said that there is an urgent need to facilitate a nationwide and extensive awareness campaign on the new curriculum.
