NamBTS face critical low blood supply

Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Namibian Blood Transfusion Service (NamBTS) is experiencing critically low blood supply at blood banks countrywide.

Hence, NamBTS is appealing to all donors, especially those with the O-type and B-type blood to donate during various campaigns.

Titus Shivute, Supervisor of Donor Recruitment and Public Relations, said they are currently faced with low sufficient blood in the country.

Thus, Shivute said the NAMBTS will be hosting a blood donation session in Windhoek this Saturday, at the blood donation clinic between 08:00 and 14:30.

“Despite the efforts of NamBTS to ensure that there are sufficient blood and blood products available countrywide during the festive season and recent preceding public holidays, we have observed a significant drop in our blood reserves for patients in hospitals after the turn of the new year,” he said.

He added that O-type and B-type blood groups are currently in reduced supply, thus they appeal to all blood donors to donate within the course of this week to ensure that lives are saved.

Shivute indicated that in order to meet the demand for blood and blood products given to patients, NAMBTS needs to collect an average of 160 blood donations daily.

He stressed that currently, only 1% of the population donates blood annually.

“We need the assistance of more Namibians of all blood types to donate blood regularly this year,” he added.

Further, NAMBTS provides free transport for blood donors on request, arrangements.

Shivute noted that all blood donors will receive a complementary N$30 airtime as a token of appreciation.
