Africa-Press – Namibia. AS of 07:00 this morning, the “Ward Cleaners” of the City of Windhoek (CoW) have been gathering in front of the Head Office.

According to the spokesperson of CoW, Heroldt Akwenye, the cleaners allegedly came to meet up with the Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) economic commissar and activist, Michael Amushelelo.

“We have had no prior knowledge of such gathering, no official communication of intention of such gathering either, or intention to hand over a grievance, etc. It, therefore, still remains unclear what the purpose thereof is. As far as the employer is concerned, this amounts to abandonment of work/absence from work without permission,” Akwenye said.

He concluded that he will keep the public abreast of any further developments.

According to Amushelelo, the workers have gone on strike due to the fact that they have been working on contract since 1990.

He added that the workers are hired on a six-month contract after which their employment is cancelled or renewed.

In addition to this, the workers have also aired their grievances over low salaries, which is equivalent to N$ 3 300 per month.

He thus added that the workers have gone on strike until their demands are met.
