Africa-Press – Namibia. CYRIL van Rooi and Cyril Moller will represent Namibia at the upcoming International Heyball Pool Association grand finale in China.

The competition runs from 20 March to 6 April in the port city of Qinhuangdao.

Moller is the reigning best player in the country, a status which earned him an invite to the global finale. Van Rooi will be at the event in his capacity as interim president of the Namibia Pool and Billiards Federation (NPBF).

“I would like to use this opportunity to congratulate Mr Cyril Moller, a member of the NPBF and secretary of Celtic Pool Club, for his achievement as the top player of the 2022 league. I wish him all the best in his performance at the International Heyball Pool Association (IHPA) grand finale in the Peoples Republic of China,” Van Rooi said.

“This invitation surely will put Namibia on the map in the sport of pool and this will be the beginning of many international competitions of this magnitude. As president of the NPBF, I’m honoured and excited to be present at this historical event as a guest of the IHPA,” he said.

Pool is relatively popular as a leisure activity in country. Van Rooi and his team aspire to grow it as a competitive sport.

The first step towards that target was becoming an affiliate of the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) on 15 October 2022 and a member of the All Africa Pool Association.

“As an interim executive committee, we face many challenges to fulfilling the requirements as per the regulations of the NSC,” said Van Rooi, who started as a snooker player at the age of 12 in the early 80s.

“I developed in this sport and achieved several milestones. I started playing pool in 1995. My passion for pool led me to become active in the administration.”

Van Rooi is looking to channel that passion and vast experience into ensuring that the NPBF interim committee delivers on its mandate.

They are tasked with primarily organising and setting up regional structures across the country, promote and develop the sport of pool and billiards in Namibia, and solicit partnership and sponsorship to develop the sport.

“I have no doubt that together with my team, we will be able to execute the tasks at hand with due diligence,” Van Rooi said.
