Africa-Press – Namibia. SUPERSPORT United striker Bradley Grobler has recently brought up a century of goals in the PSL era, and there is another forward who is hot on his heels.

Peter Shalulile’s hattrick for Mamelodi Sundowns against Marumo Gallants in the Nedbank Cup Last 16 on Thursday takes his tally for topflight clubs to 94 and at his current scoring rate it is surely not long before he reached three figures.

That does not include the 20 goals he scored in what is now the Motsepe Foundation Championship, which would take his overall tally to 114 since he arrived at the club at the start of the 2015/16 season.

He was spotted by Owen da Gama playing for Namibia in the Cosafa Cup and snapped up by Highlands, though in truth he had very little impact in his first two seasons.

His breakthrough year came in 2017/18 when he scored 15 goals in helping Highlands to promotion from the second-tier.

It was a battle again in the big-time and he netted only eight goals in his first 38 appearances in the DStv Premiership (one every 4,75 games).

But that all changed from 2019/20 onwards when he scored 16 goals and won a move to Mamelodi Sundowns, where he has been simply sensational.

Since the start of that season he has 63 league goals in exactly 100 appearances, or a goal every 1,59 games.

He has 71 goals in the DStv Premiership, two in the MTN8, a record 14 in the Nedbank Cup and seven in the CAF Champions League.

His numbers are even more impressive if you take his tally from the start of the 2021/22 season. He has netted 45 goals in a little over a season and a half, with those strikes coming in 67 appearances (1,49 goals per game).

So it is clear that he is getting better as the years roll on and at the age of 29, can be lethal for Sundowns for quite a few more seasons.

That age makes it unlikely he will win a move to Europe, that ship might have sailed, with his likely only other destination outside of South Africa being a big pay-day in the Middle East.

Shalulile has eight goals in his last seven games and next in his sights will be Stellenbosch FC, a team he has netted against in three of their last four meetings, including the 3-0 win earlier in this campaign.
