Africa-Press – Namibia. THE National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (Namcor) claims a confidentiality clause within an agreement signed with Qatar Energies in March 2022 protects the interests of both parties and prevents the disclosure of sensitive information without prior consultation.
This follows Affirmative Repositioning (AR) leader Job Amupanda sharing documents of the oil deal between Namcor and Qatar Energies on social media.
“The reason why grootman (president Hage Geingob) said our oil is not ours is because deals are concluded. The Qataris have already pocketed politicians. Their ministers are in direct communications with board members of Namcor. Namcor has already signed the secret energy agreement,” said Amupanda.
The two parties signed an agreement in March 2022 for developing Namcor’s capacity and skills in light of recent oil discoveries.
This includes training and development of Namcor employees.
Part of the agreement includes a confidentiality clause which reads: “neither parties shall make any disclosure to any third party to the public that is in relation to this agreement without the prior written consent of the other participant.”
Namcor’s spokesperson Paulo Coelho in a statement on Friday said confidentiality clauses within agreements are standard practice in business partnerships.
“Confidentiality clauses exist to protect the interests of both parties and ensure that sensitive information is not disclosed without prior consultation. This provision does not signify a “secret oil deal”, but rather adheres to conventional business practices in business relationships,” he said.
According to Coelho, the reports are baseless and without merit.
He said the relationship with Qatar Energies will benefit Namcor, Namibia and the broader energy community.
Coelho stressed that Namcor remains dedicated to conducting its business activities with
integrity and transparency and is committed to providing updates on the progress of the deal.
