Africa-Press – Namibia. THE vacuum in regional leadership will soon be a thing of the past, as Netball Namibia has embarked on a mission to resuscitate its structures.

Netball Namibia president Rebekka //Goagoses recently told Desert Radio that the process to ensure good governance and accountability at the regional level is underway.

This has seen in the Khomas, Kavango East and West regions recently successfully electing new leaders.

“Our aim is to ensure good governance in the regions, because if you do not have a sound and active leadership, unfortunately players on the ground will miss out on opportunities,” said //Goagoses.

“We cannot expect players to double up as regional leaders. The idea is to have competent people who can run the activities of the regions,” //Goagoses emphasised.

“We are setting proper structures in the regions. And, with the new leadership in Khomas and the two Kavango regions, things are now taking shape.”

She said it is important for players to be given opportunities for exposure by staging active netball leagues.

//Goagoses said with the establishment of regional leagues, teams can be promoted to the MTC Namibia Premier League and ultimately be in line for selection to the national teams.

“That is why it is important for us to urgently sort out the regional leadership crisis. Netball is not just about the national team, but regions need to come on par by implementing various programmes that will complement the growth of the sport,” //Goagoses.

The netball mother body plans to conclude at least 90% regional elections by the end of June.

“The mandate for the regional leadership is to adopt the standardised constitution that speaks of accountability, good governance and financial prudence,” //Goagoses noted.

Netball Namibia is also working towards securing improved funding to ensure that the national teams remain engaged in international competitions to avoid being downgraded on the world rankings.

Namibia will compete in the World Cup qualifiers in South Africa in June, plus the African Championship and host the annual Debmarine Pent Series tournament.

Julene Meyers was re-appointed Desert Jewels head coach after the contract of Malawian coach Mary Waja, who led Namibia’s failed 2023 World Cup qualification attempt, was not extended.

Meyer has a four-year contract during which time she is tasked with developing a blueprint for all national teams, including empowering the MTC Premier Netball League’s coaches.
