Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), Emma Theofelus, recently launched the National Cybersecurity Strategy and Awareness Creation Plan (2022-2027).
The launch was held at the A. Shipena Secondary School in Windhoek on Friday. It was held under the theme “A step towards Cyber resilience and Digital Security”.
The Cybersecurity Strategy and Awareness Creation Plan, which was approved by cabinet last year, is aimed at safeguarding the National Critical Information Infrastructure. It also intends to create awareness and collaborate on cybersecurity to continuously improve the safety of internet users in the cyberspace.
According to Theofelus, the growing scourge of cybercrime has the potential to negatively impact the nation’s ability to achieve its development agenda, adding that technology platforms need to be protected and the most vulnerable need to be aware and educated about the perils of the internet. The ministry, she said, therefore saw the need to develop and implement the plan.
“As Namibians are becoming more connected and reliant on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to capitalize on the benefits and opportunities presented by ICTs every day, there is an increase in criminal activities on cyberspace and network that interferes with digital participation, connectivity and the integrity of the nation’s critical infrastructure,” Theofelus explained.
The deputy minister further said that the government will demonstrate leadership in advancing Namibia’s cybersecurity interests, both locally and abroad, by ensuring the enhanced collaboration and coordination of strategic cybersecurity and cybercrime issues amongst stakeholders, and by advocating for an open, free and secure internet.
MICT reaffirmed its commitment towards the implementation of the recently-launched strategy through a multi-stakeholder approach, and called on all internet users to practice safe habits to avoid harm or compromise their privacy while surfing on the cyberspace.
