Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Eenhana District of the Oukwanyama Traditional Authority (OuTA) hosted its Annual Omaongo Festival on Saturday.

Queen Martha Mwadinomho Kristian Nelumbu was the guest of honour and she was joined by Ohangwena regional governor Walde Ndevashiya and other dignitaries.

The yearly event is hosted on a rotational basis by the district’s village clusters.

The Edimba cluster near Eenhana town was this year’s host.

Villagers flocked to Edimba to enjoy the slightly alcoholic omaongo traditional drink, produced from the marula fruits that are abundant in the North this time of the year.

The Omaongo (also known as omagongo) is produced by squeezing the marula fruits and then letting the resultant juice ferment naturally for a day or two.

As is customary at events associated with omaongo, meat predominated the food that was served at Edimba.

At least two head-of-cattle and more than ten goats were specifically slaughtered for the event.

The small-scale omaongo festivals are distinct and do neither compete with nor replace the Annual Omagongo Festival hosted by the eight traditional authorities of Aawambo, which festival is expected to take place at Ombalantu’s Chief Oswin Mukulu’s residence in June this year.

That will be the first Omagongo Festival since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic three years ago.
