Africa-Press – Namibia. President Hage Geingob has left Namibia to attend two major international events. The Namibian leader is off to Scotland first, where he will join at least 25,000 world leaders, negotiators, activists, delegates and journalists from 200 countries expected at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) held in Glasgow from 31 October to 12 November.
Geingob will thereafter participate in the 4th Edition of the Paris Peace Forum (PPF), scheduled for 11 to 13 November in France. The main aim of COP26 is to secure lasting and effective solutions for a greener and cleaner planet. The World Leaders Summit on 1 and 2 November kicks off the two weeks of negotiations aimed at driving action on climate change and delivering on the world’s comprehensive climate treaty, the Paris Agreement.
The PPF’s goal is to place global governance at the top of the international agenda. Different stakeholders discuss global governance issues and cooperate on solutions through three main spaces: Space for Solutions, Space for Debates and Space for Innovations.
Delayed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, COP26 offers countries the opportunity to come together in the fight against climate change. Nations around the globe are under pressure to tackle the greenhouse gas emissions driving climate change.
Action already pledged by nations to curb emissions in the next decade will leave the world well off track to limit global warming to 1.5 C above pre-industrial times, beyond which increasingly severe impacts will be felt.
