Africa-Press – Namibia. AGRICULTURE is one of Namibia’s most important sectors. The majority of Namibia’s population is directly or indirectly dependent on the agricultural sector for their livelihoods. Therefore, Deputy Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, said that agriculture is a sector they can focus on to address food security.
Nandi-Ndaitwah made these remarks recently, emphasizing that through agriculture, they can tackle the issue of food security at both household and national levels.
“It is imperative to note that agriculture has a multiplier effect in terms of job creation,” she said.
She further added that, currently in Namibia, unless something extraordinary happens, most of the agricultural products sold in their markets, such as tomatoes, cabbages, and onions, among others, are not produced locally. This makes it costly for their small and medium enterprises (SMEs) compared to locally produced goods.
Therefore, Nandi-Ndaitwah stressed that investing in agriculture, including urban agriculture, can improve livelihoods and contribute to the realization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in addressing poverty and hunger (No Poverty and Zero Hunger).
