Africa-Press – Namibia. IT is now the talk of the town. People are praising the government for the latest increase in monthly social grants that will be payable from next month. The biggest beneficiaries of these grants will be children with disabilities.

Children living with disabilities are the greatest beneficiaries of the new adjustments, with their social benefits having jumped from N$250 to N$1 400 per month. The old age pension, disability benefits, and social grants for orphans and vulnerable children were increased by N$100.

The old age grants and adult disability benefits have moved from N$1 300 to N$1 400 per month, while the monthly grants for orphans and vulnerable children have increased from N$250 to N$350. According to Martha Mbambo, the Executive Director of the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare, the new amounts, plus three months’ refunds, will be paid out to beneficiaries next month.

Thus, in July, a child living with disabilities will be paid N$1 400 plus N$3 450 in refunds, and a beneficiary of the old age or disability grant will be paid N$1 400 plus N$300 in refunds. The amount for an orphan or vulnerable child will be N$350 plus N$300 in refunds.

Members of the community are generally happy with the adjustments, but there are also critical voices that describe the social grants for vulnerable children as “peanuts”.
