Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Namibian Police has thrown out a dragnet across the country to re-arrest the 61-year-old Walter ‘Rooies’ Mostert who escaped from lawful custody on Friday evening.
Mostert, a former magistrate of Gobabis, became a fugitive from justice when he fled to South Africa, was arrested at beginning of May this year when the police were tipped off by a resident of Keetmanshoop about his presence in Namibia.
The arrest was executed at a roadblock near Tses and after his first appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court Mostert was remanded in custody. Mostert’s incarceration followed after the Anti-Corruption Commission obtained a warrant of arrest three years ago.
The 61-year-old Mostert fled Namibia in 2017 and has been residing in South Africa ever since. The former magistrate is facing 29 charges of corruption, fraud, extortion, money laundering, theft, contraventions of the Immigration Act, and defeating the course of justice.
Some of the allegations against Mostert originate from a business deal which involved him and a South African citizen where he assisted the foreigner to buy a farm in the //Karas region after assisting him with immigration matters.
The South African national accused Mostert of producing and providing him with false immigration documentation. The former magistrate is also accused of fraud and theft. These accusations stem from a business deal that involved the sale of a farm to a Windhoek resident.
It is alleged that Mostert received a 49% stake in a farm and payment of N$1.5 million. He is further accused of selling his stake in the property to another person. The former magistrate managed to escape from lawful custody while he was under police guard in a Windhoek hospital.
It is suspected that Mostert might be heading back to South Africa and all police stations in the country as well as all border posts where he might attempt to cross, have been notified to be on the lookout for the fugitive.
