Nampol launches road safety campaign

Africa-Press – Namibia. SINCE road accidents increase over the festive season, the Namibian police will again be watching motorists like hawks to ensure they adhere to road rules.

Nampol officially launched its Festive Season Road Safety Campaign 2021/2022 at the traffic checkpoint in Keetmanshoop recently. The campaign runs from 17 November until 17 January 2022.

At the launch, //Kharas regional commander David Indongo said more traffic law-enforcement officers have been employed on the country’s main roads and at road traffic checkpoints, especially on the B1 and B2 highways.

According to Indongo, the police will focus on areas such as cross patrols on the main roads; execution of warrants of arrest; roadworthiness of motor vehicles; constant visibility on national roads; speed measuring; passenger-carrying vehicles; random breath testing; and drunk-driving.

Statistics from 01 January 2021 until 14 November 2021 indicate 2 579 accidents, which resulted in 4 464 injuries and 426 fatalities. In comparison with the same period as last year, 01 January 2020 until 14 November 2020, accidents increased by 8%, injuries by 6% and fatalities by 12%.

The Festive Season Road Safety Campaign for 2020/21 indicated a total of 471 accidents, 866 injuries and 84 fatalities. “It already gives an indication that road users are still not complying with the road safety regulations,” Indongo said.

“All road users are compelled to adhere to the provisions of the Road Traffic and Transportation Act at all times, not only when they see a traffic checkpoint or traffic patrol vehicles on the highway but as a standard throughout their lifetime.”
