Africa-Press – Namibia. A total of seven records were established at the third Bank Windhoek long course gala of the season which took place at the Olympia Pool over the weekend.

Lorenzo Esterhuizen of Aqua Swimming and Fitness Academy broke two records in the boys 12 and under age group category. In the 100m backstroke he set a new record of 1 minute 10,21 seconds, and in the 200m backstroke he set a new record of 2 minutes 27,62 seconds.

In the boys 13 to 14 year old category, Oliver Durand of Dolphins Swimming Club set a new 1 500m freestyle record of 18 minutes 8,73 seconds. The other four records were established in the masters age group category for swimmers aged 45 and older.

Ilona Sickel of Marlins Aquatic Club set two new records – in the 50m freestyle with a time of 32,84 seconds, and in the 400m freestyle with a time of 5 minutes 46,21 seconds.

Francois van der Westhuizen of Marlins also set two new records – in the 50m breaststroke with a time of 36,57 seconds and in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1 minute 23,76 seconds.

Oliver Durand produced the best performance of the gala in terms of Fina points, when he obtained 543 Fina points for winning the Boys 13 to 14 200m individual medley in 2 minutes 19,67 seconds.

Durand also produced four of the top ten performances at the gala, as he obtained 428 points for his time of 1:10,36 in the 100m breaststroke; 512 points for his time of 18:08,73 in the 1 500m freestyle; and 505 points for his time of 27,96 in the 50m butterfly.

Reza Westerduin of Aqua gave the second best performance, obtaining 541 Fina points for winning the girls 13 to 14 200m backstroke in 2 minutes 31,33 seconds, while Arkell Wellmann of Dolphins also obtained 541 Fina points for his time of 2 minutes 19,88 seconds in the Men’s open 200m individual medley. Wellmann also obtained 508 points for his time of 1:04,98 in the 100m backstroke.

Other swimmers who featured in the top ten include Robin Engelhard of Dolphins who obtained 519 points for his time of 27,71 in the boys 15-16 butterfly; and Mikah Burger of Dolphins, who obtained 509 points for his time of 26,18 seconds in the Boys 17-18 50m freestyle.

The gala saw a fine turnout with 132 swimmers from four clubs competing, namely Dolphins Swimming Club, Aqua Swimming and Fitness Academy, Marlins Aquatic Club and Phoenix Swimming Academy.
