Impact of social media towards start-up businesses

Africa-Press – Namibia. Most start-up business owners in Namibia tend to use social media for wrong tenacities which incline to rescind the business based on the erroneous choices the owners make.

Social media is meant to create a platform for most startup business as a marketing platform which most start-up business owners tend not to take the platform at their own advantage in Namibia but, at their own disadvantage without themselves being aware of the fact that their usage of social media is destroying their own businesses, because of trying to feed their own social media life popularities.

One might be wondering, what do you mean social media tend to destroy businesses? One thing we need to take note of is that a business is the reflection of the owner, what the business owner does or the choices the owner make, affects and destroy the business completely.

One thing I have observed is that most start-up business owners tend to do business or entrepreneurship in Namibia for the wrong reasons, for Social media; where the business owners use their business to gain social media popularity, and try to impress the world with a counterfeit life while the workers in their organisation are suffering based on their wrong choices, living a counterfeit life is the most expensive life one can live because one needs to keep up with the expectations one already portrayed to the world.

This have a lot of impact towards the workers in the organisation, as this leads to workers not being paid on time or not being offered simple benefits, as the owners tend to exhaust company resources to maintain the life they tend to portray on social media.

This behaviour mainly causes mental health issues to workers in the organization, which leads to other psychological health issues to the workers. These people (workers) are the backbone of any business, a business is nothing without the workers and this is one thing I have noticed in many young start-up business owners in Namibia.

Start-up business owners tend not to realise this due to the fact that they suck in a world where their lives are controlled by social media, which affect the wellbeing of their workers in a negative way.

One might be wondering, but what is the solution to these problems that have been identified in Namibian start-up businesses. Before, we move to the solution, one need to identify the gap between social media impacts on business owners in relation to the business itself. The gaps identified on this aspect are the lack of knowledge of the definition of creating a business and how to run the business successfully.

I think many startup business owners in Namibia need to be educated about these fundamentals. In addition, business owners in particular startup business owners need to be educated about mental health issues which most of people tend not to take serious in Namibia so that they can learn and unlearn that they are in a leadership position and every decision they make has an impact on their workers, community and the whole nation, at large.

Awareness of mental health in many small businesses is lacking in Namibia. The reasons why small business owners take decisions that affect their workers is because they lack the awareness of mental health of their people which affect the backbone of the whole business, which is their workers.

This also leads to productivity rate within the organisation to decrease, which causes the whole company to fall apart, which is a huge cost within an organisation.

The fundamental to run a business is very important that business owners should take very serious. Else, small businesses will continue to fall apart due to trying to impress the streets.

In many African culture, there is a saying that goes; “always make sure that things are sorted out first at home before you go and impress the streets”.

In a business context, one can use the same philosophy that ensures that your obligations in your business are sorted out first, before you try and impress the streets. Which will never add value to your business.
