Swapo women's council congress postponed due to Covid surge

Africa-Press – Namibia. The Swapo Party Women’s Council congress that was scheduled to take place next week has been postponed indefinitely amid the increasing Covid-19 infections in the country.

The congress was expected to elect a new leadership and nominate women’s wing delegates to Swapo’s seventh elective congress that takes place next year. Outgoing women’s council secretary Eunice Iipinge confirmed the postponement on Friday.

She said that the congress was postponed in line with a directive from the mother party which cautioned against hosting the event in the midst of increasing Covid-19 infections.

About 700 people, including delegates and observers from sister parties and other Swapo wings, were expected to attend. Iipinge said a new date for the congress will be determined, depending on the Covid-19 situation in the country.

Former mayor and Swapo councillor at the Windhoek municipal council, Fransina Kahungu, and an official in the gender ministry, Katrina Liswani, have been nominated to contest for the position of women’s council secretary. Kahungu is the incumbent deputy secretary. Maria Ntusi and Sylvia Kandanga are nominated for the deputy secretary position.
