Heroes’ Day commemoration boosts Omuthiya’s local economy

Africa-Press – Namibia. ACCOMMODATION establishments in and around Omuthiya are fully booked as people from all corners of the country flock to the town, which is the seat of the Oshikoto regional government, to attend the Heroes’ Day commemoration on Monday.

Latecomers are forced to look for accommodation in distant places such as Tsumeb, Ondangwa, or even Ongwediva and Oshakati, where accommodation is also scarce due to the Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair 2024, which kicked off on Friday.

Emily Shileka, Manager for Hospitality and Tourism at Stream 2 Property, said that people booked in advance. “We have no available rooms in our facilities,” she said, adding: “Hosting the Heroes’ Day commemorations, or any other national event, has a very significant byproduct, which is the boosting of the local economy. That helps businesses grow, thereby contributing to the town’s overall development.”

She said that hosting the central commemorative event in Omuthiya brings significant benefits to businesses, promotes local products and services, and attracts tourists.

Shileka pointed out that the influx of visitors has increased the demand for accommodation, providing a welcome stimulus for service providers. “This,” she said, “is directly benefiting hotels, restaurants, and informal traders.”

Additionally, she said that such national events are like “mini trade fairs” because they provide a platform for local entrepreneurs to showcase their products, leading to long-term business growth.

“The event fosters community pride and engagement, strengthens ties between businesses and residents, and leads to increased customer loyalty and long-term economic sustainability,” she said.

On the issue of safety, Shileka assured those staying at accommodation facilities in the town that safety and security measures are properly in place.

Omuthiya has accommodation facilities such as iDeal, City Lodge, Road House, Heka, At-last, Okashana, Kizomba, Tropoh, and Omukwa Guest House. Gondwana’s King Nehale Lodge is located a few kilometres away.
