Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Uibes Conservancy in the Hardap region last week received 150 ewes from the Environmental Investment Fund under the Green Climate Fund.

The conservancy is expected to receive another 130 ewes and 20 rams early next year. The director of planning, evaluation, and monitoring at the Hardap regional council, Sima Luipert, says the aim of the donations is to help transition farmers to climate-smart farming.

Luipert says they will restock farmers as well those who lost their livestock during the prolonged drought. “We obtained funding to the value of N$1,5 million to assist farmers crippled by the drought, retrain them in light of climate change, and help them obtain an income,” Luipert says.

Fabian Booys, agricultural technician for the Daweb constituency, says farmers will be introduced to hydroponic fodder production and horticulture. “Horticulture is being introduced to diversify the income of the farmers to not only rely on livestock farming,” Booys says. He says another element of poultry production will form part of the project to strengthen and empower women-headed households.
