Africa-Press – Namibia. WITH Christmas a few days away and the number of travellers going home for holidays increasing, the country continues to record more new Covid-19 cases, of which most are unvaccinated.

The Ministry of Health and Social Services said in the last 24-hour reporting cycle a total of 5 313 test samples were taken, of which 1 334 new positive cases were recorded. This represents a 25.1% positivity rate.

Health minister Dr. Kalumbi Shangula said the increase is most likely due to more travelling countrywide. “Most positive cases are still recorded amongst the unvaccinated,” the minister said.

Shangula said the increase was reported in 12 regions, with the Khomas Region recording 50.2% of new cases, followed by the Erongo Region with 24.6%. In Khomas, 52.1% of re-infected cases were reported.

“Among the confirmed cases 65 are learners, 12 teachers, 15 students and 27 healthcare workers from different institutions,” he said. Shangula noted that of the positive cases, 33 people have received one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and 114 cases are fully vaccinated.

By 18 December, 397 150 people had received one dose of the vaccine, representing 26.5% of the target population including 1 070 children aged 12 to 17 years.

A total of 100 269 have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which is administered as one dose, while 235 020 adults had received two doses of other vaccines.

Therefore, 335 289 have completed the vaccination, translating into 22.3% of the target population, while 1 849 people have received a third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. File photo for illustrative purposes.
