Africa-Press – Namibia. THE founding editor of The Namibian newspaper Gwen Lister says the late archbishop Desmond Tutu lived his truth.

Tutu along with the late Anglican Diocese of Namibian James Kauluma visited the office of The Namibian, which was under siege in 1986.

The newspaper’s offices were attacked and almost burned down in 1988 by a vigilante group called Wit Wolwe in an attempt to suppress its reporting on human rights abuses by South African forces.

Lister in a tweet on Sunday said the visit by the two bishops gave the staff of the newspaper hope and courage.

“He revered a free press and believed in what was good and right and just,” said Lister.

In The Namibian’s 25th anniversary commemorative magazine, Tutu commended the paper for remaining true to the ideals of telling the truth and press freedom.

“For democracy and freedom to flourish and for good governance to happen we need a free press. The Namibian has a proud record. Long may it flourish,” he said.
