Africa-Press – Namibia. FIRE extinguishers are too often misused, posing as doorstops or left forgotten in a dusty corner, which is very dangerous because these vital pieces of equipment need proper maintenance and care.

Hence, Oshakati-born Matias Shekuza (31) saw it fit to fill the gap. He and three partners started Wenna Investments CC that deals with servicing and refilling of fire extinguishers.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, rechargeable fire extinguishers must be replaced every six years, whereas disposable extinguishers must be replaced every 12 years.

Shekuza said while working for a fire extinguisher delivery company in Walvis Bay, he acquired the knowledge needed to operate and refill any fire extinguishers.

“The company is still a new baby on the block and we hope to expand to other parts of the country as time goes by,” he said.

The business opened eight months ago.

Shekuza said their main challenges are finding enough customers and landing themselves tenders to supply to companies.

“A little hope and a financial boost from new customers will get us off the ground,” Shekuza said.
