Africa-Press – Namibia. Fisheries minister Derek Klazen says the annual crayfish festival serves as a catalyst, boosting the socio-economic development of the hosting harbour town, Lüderitz.

The remarks were read on his behalf at the launch of the 18th edition of the Crayfish Festival.

“The primary objective of the festival is to, with the support of governmental fishing quotas, help boost the socio-economic development at the harbour town of Lüderitz, particularly the local tourist economy,” he added.

The politician, when referring to the 2025 theme, ‘Safeguarding our Ocean Riches’, said it highlights the importance of care and the protection of the country’s ocean.

“Since oceans can only provide to mankind if we look after them, we should continue to keep our oceans clean, and ensure that overfishing does not take place on our watch,” he urged. Klazen continued, “Without a doubt, the harbour town of Lüderitz is destined to become a booming commercial centre in a few years to come, and I urge you all as community members to embrace these new realities that come with socio-economic opportunities for all Namibians.” In his welcoming remarks, Lüderitz mayor Phillippus Balhao said Lüderitz crayfish/rock lobster festival forms an integral part of residents’ identity and roots.

“It sets us apart within the Namibian marine economic landscape, and further contributes towards our foreign earnings and Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” he said. The coastal town’s first citizen continued that the festival occupies a special place in the rich history of the town, whereby its unique character is recognised.

“May this year’s theme be a clarion call for us as a collective to strategically manage the co-existence of our marine economy with other economic sectors such as mining, renewable energy, and oil and gas.” Balhao also said it is a marvel to observe the united front exhibited by the residents of the town during festivals, ensuring a successful celebration of their culinary heritage.
