Africa-Press – Namibia. Swapo Member of Parliament (MP), Hilma Iita, in her contribution to the 2025/26 national budget debate called for an increase in the allocation to the portfolio of Veterans’ Affairs.

The Veterans’ Affairs portfolio received N$1.5 billion, while the defence portfolio received a N$7.5 billion allocation from the budget.

Speaking in the National Assembly recently, Iita said lawmakers are obligated to ensure that those who fought for Namibia’s freedom are taken care of.

“Let us honour their sacrifices not just with words, but with deeds that advance the cause of justice, fairness and national unity. They must not be left out,” she said.

The MP also urged fellow parliamentarians to acknowledge that the country is facing economic challenges, which are further worsened by global instability.

Iita added that the Appropriation Bill represents a commitment to fiscal discipline, ensuring that every dollar spent is directed towards sustainable growth and alleviation of poverty.

“The emphasis is on accountability, and transparency in public spending must remain paramount as we must safeguard the interests of our citizens,” she noted.

The Swapo parliamentarian said as custodians of public trust, lawmakers must remain mindful that public funds belong to the people.

“Our decisions must reflect this, with a clear focus on improving lives and fostering resilience across our nation,” she said.

Iita reminded her fellow MPs that the true strength of the august House lies not within its walls, but in the positive, lasting impact of its decisions on the people.

“With these words, I pledge my full support to the 2025/26 Appropriation Bill, and urge my fellow honourable members to do the same in the interests of our nation and her people,” she stated.
