Africa-Press – Namibia. FORMER President Nangolo Mbumba has commended the University of Namibia (UNAM) for its proactive approach in addressing the country’s pressing challenges by introducing academic programmes tailored to meet national and regional needs.
“Namibia faces multifaceted challenges that demand innovative and practical solutions. Among these are water scarcity, high unemployment rates, energy insecurity, an over-reliance on raw mineral exports, an underdeveloped manufacturing sector, inadequate housing, and insufficient transport infrastructure to support economic and social development,” he said.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of UNAM’s Northern Campuses, Mbumba, who also serves as the university’s Chancellor, emphasised that while these challenges are significant, they also present opportunities for engineers and researchers to lead through innovation and collaboration.
“I am informed that UNAM is actively responding to these challenges by introducing cutting-edge programmes designed to address national and regional needs,” Mbumba said.
He highlighted UNAM’s Manufacturing Engineering programme with specialisation in Welding Engineering, the Master of Science (MSc) in Petroleum Engineering, as well as the postgraduate programmes in Green Hydrogen, Water Engineering, Transport Engineering, and Structural Engineering as examples of these cutting-edge initiatives.
“I am confident that these programmes will help address the pressing needs of our society while positioning Namibia as a leader in innovation and sustainability in these fields. In the words of our late Founding Father and Leader of the Namibian Revolution, Dr Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, ‘The best way in which we can address social and economic inequalities in our country is by ensuring that all our people, especially the youth, are provided with quality education,’” Mbumba added.
