Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sankwasa James Sankwasa, recently visited Katima Mulilo to preside over the groundbreaking ceremony for a new wastewater treatment plant and to engage with leaders on enhancing the town’s sanitation and cleanliness.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Minister Sankwasa underscored the significance of the new wastewater treatment plant, describing it as a vital solution to the town’s persistent sewerage problems, which he referred to as a serious public health risk requiring urgent attention.
His sentiments were echoed by the Mayor of Katima Mulilo, John Ntemwa, who emphasised that the initiative goes beyond infrastructure development and is focused on enhancing the quality of life for residents.

“This project is about restoring dignity, protecting our environment, and laying the groundwork for sustainable growth,” Ntemwa said.
The mayor added that the plant would support future housing projects, attract business investment, and significantly enhance public health standards.
Following the groundbreaking ceremony, Sankwasa, together with local leaders, toured Ngweze Location, where emergency sewer excavation works are currently under way. The intervention is aimed at assisting three households that have been heavily impacted by ongoing sewerage issues.
The Minister also took part in a strategic engagement meeting with the management team of the Katima Mulilo Town Council. The meeting provided an opportunity for the Council to present key challenges affecting infrastructure and service delivery, as well as to share progress in various areas of development.
Sankwasa voiced his concern over the town’s general state of cleanliness and called for stronger cooperation between the business community and the local authority. He stressed that keeping the town clean and orderly is a collective responsibility. He also encouraged ongoing dialogue and reaffirmed the central government’s commitment to supporting local governance and development initiatives.
