NUST hosts first graduation in Ohangwena

Africa-Press – Namibia. A TOTAL of 141 students were on Thursday conferred with various qualifications, including a PhD candidate, during the first-ever Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) graduation ceremony at the Billy Mwaningange Rural Development Centre in Eembaxu village, Ondobe Constituency.

Speaking during the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, Dino Ballotti, said that by bringing world-class academic opportunities closer to the people of Ohangwena, NUST is not only investing in the future of their youth but also catalysing economic growth and social upliftment in the region.

According to Ballotti, this is a testament to the university’s dedication to inclusivity, excellence, and national progress, and they salute this remarkable achievement.

He indicated that Ohangwena has approximately over 260 schools, with a learner population of more than 100,000.

“Post-secondary education institutions in the region have been limited to the Eenhana Vocational Training Centre (EVTC) and a few private colleges,” he said.

He added that NUST was the first to lead the pack and open a campus there.

Speaking at the same occasion, former President Hifikepunye Pohamba indicated that throughout his life in public service, he has always believed that the progress of any nation is directly linked to the level of education of its people.

“Not just any education, but accessible, affordable, equitable, quality education and training for every child, regardless of where they are born or how much their parents earn,” he said.

He added that during his tenure, they introduced free education in primary school.

“I am proud of the strides that Her Excellency Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is making in an effort to expand access to education in Namibia—from universal primary education to increasing access and financial support for students aspiring to tertiary education and training,” he added.

He emphasised that their vision has always been clear: no Namibian child should be denied an opportunity to learn.
