Africa-Press – Namibia. The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT) has urged Namibians to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions against wildfires.
This follows a fuel load assessment conducted across the country, which found that the fuel load is high and the risk of wildfires is currently imminent.
In a media statement issued on Wednesday, the ministry highlighted the dangers that wildfires pose to both natural ecosystems and communities.
“They can rapidly burn millions of hectares of land, and destroy everything in their paths (homes, trees, animals and humans).
Wildfires can cause widespread damage to property, infrastructure and natural resources, including grazing for our livestock and wildlife,” the statement reads.
The ministry called on stakeholders, such as line ministries, governors’ offices, regional and local authorities, traditional authorities and farmers, to raise public awareness about the dangers of wildfires.
They are urged to take part in fire-fighting workshops in preparation for possible outbreaks.
The statement highlighted preventive measures that the public should consider helping prevent wildfires.
Among these is the advice to never leave a fire unattended, and to ensure it is completely extinguished before leaving the site.
