TWELVE Covid-19 deaths from six districts were reported in the last 24-hour cycle, with five deaths occurring in the Onandjokwe district.

According to the Ministry of Health and Social Services, one death occurred on 30 December, seven between 1 and 3 January, and four between 4 and 5 January.

Two deaths occurred at home, in Okongo and Rundu.

Only two of the deceased were fully vaccinated, and they had existing co-morbidities. The remaining ten cases were not vaccinated, making up 83.3% of the total reported deaths.

“We announce 480 confirmed cases from 2 283 results in the last 24-hour reporting cycle, which represents a 21.0% positivity ratio,” Health Minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula said.

Of the total confirmed cases, 460 are new cases and 20 cases are re-infections. The ages range from one year to 104 years.

The Khomas region again recorded the highest number of new cases (118), constituting 25.7% of the total cases, followed by the Kavango East region that reported 79 cases, accounting for 17.2%.

Among the confirmed cases are 35 learners, 17 healthcare workers, four teachers and three students from different institutions of higher learning.

Nine cases have received one dose of the vaccine, 64 cases are fully vaccinated, of which five have received booster doses, and 19 of the vaccinated cases did not specify the number of doses received.

Of the new cases, 388 cases are not vaccinated, accounting for 81%.

“We are reporting 378 new recoveries from eight regions,” Dr Shangula said.

“The number of active cases is 14 755 and 333 cases are currently hospitalized across all the regions, of which 26 are in Intensive Care Units (ICUs),” he said.

Five of the hospitalized cases have received one dose of the vaccine, while 34 are fully vaccinated. None of the cases in ICUs are vaccinated.

By 4 January 2022, a total of 406 267 people aged 18 years and above have received at least one dose of the vaccine, representing 27.1% of the target population (1 501 041).

A total of 105 990 have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, while 239 202 adults had received two doses of other vaccine types. Therefore, 345 192 adults have completed their vaccination, translating to 23.0% of the target population.

A total of 2 051 children aged 12 to 17 years have received at least one dose of the Pfizer vaccine, representing 0.7% of the target population (307 298).

Of these, 89 are fully vaccinated.

The cumulative number of people vaccinated with a first dose, both adults and children, is 408 318 of which 345 281 are fully vaccinated, while 6 537 people have received a booster dose.
