Africa-Press – Namibia. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has commended the Namibia Post Limited (NamPost) for its continued efforts in preserving Namibia’s democratic legacy through commemorative postage stamps that honour the country’s Heads of State.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the NamPost delegation at State House, Nandi-Ndaitwah described the post office as a vital communication hub and praised the parastatal for staying true to its mandate.
“Internationally, it is recognised that the post office is always the centre of the country, as all the mail comes from all over the world and lands there before being dispatched,” the president said. “The Post Office remains historically the most important connector in the world now and possibly in the future.”
The NamPost delegation, led by board chairperson Simeon Nangolo Amukete, presented a set of newly issued stamps commemorating the inauguration of Nandi-Ndaitwah, Namibia’s first female Head of State and the tenure of her predecessor, Nangolo Mbumba.
“It is our established culture at NamPost to issue stamps depicting the President of the country in the year of taking office. We started this tradition with the Founding President [Sam Nujoma] back in 1990 and have continued it ever since,” he said.
Amukete added that the issuance of Mbumba’s stamp posthumously was a deliberate move to preserve the line of succession, particularly given the unique circumstances surrounding his brief presidency.
“We understand that stamp collectors locally and internationally are keenly awaiting this stamp issue. Besides honouring presidents, stamps of this nature are a contribution to the recording of our history in different formats,” he said.
The stamp designer, Helga Denker, presented the President with additional memorabilia, including a book on Namibia’s national parks and a 2023 report on wildlife crime enforcement. Denk recalled their past collaboration during Nandi-Ndaitwah’s time as minister of environment and tourism.
“I used to work at NACSO and WWF when we took that photo of you on horseback in the Auas Mountains,” Denker said.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah reminisced fondly about the photo shoot. “That horse photo made quite an impact. One day, I was at Dolomite, and a group of tourists asked the receptionist if I was ‘the lady on the horse’. They had the photo, and when they showed it, the receptionist confirmed. So, you can see the power of that picture,” she explained.
NamPost also used the occasion to highlight its broader role in financial inclusion and communication services across the country.
“We are proud to say that we are the single best courier service provider in Namibia. More than 250 000 Namibians have accounts with NamPost and in 51 locations, we are the only financial service provider. Our micro-lending arm has disbursed over N$750 million in loans,” said Amukete.
