Speaker sends message of solidarity after SA parliament fire

Africa-Press – Namibia. FOLLOWING the fire that devastated South Africa’s parliament in Cape Town, Prof Peter Katjavivi, Speaker of the National Assembly of Namibia, has sent a message to his SA counterpart, Honourable Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.

The message reads: “We learned with great sadness about the fire that engulfed the Parliament Building of South Africa on Sunday, 02 January 2022. We are gravely disheartened by the damage done by the fire at the National Assembly Chamber and other Assembly buildings.

This was even more distressing, coming soon after the funeral of Archbishop Desmond Tutu that was held in the vicinity of the Parliament buildings. On behalf of the National Assembly of the Parliament of the Republic of Namibia, I extend to you our sympathy and solidarity after the fire.

We wish you success in your efforts to rebuild and restore the buildings. Parliament continues to be a cornerstone of the constitutional democracy which our two nations practice. Please accept, Honourable Speaker, the assurances of my highest esteem.”
