Africa-Press – Namibia. Erongo governor Natalia /Goagoses has warned against the abuse of social grants by beneficiaries.

She said those misusing grants are at risk of losing the financial aid, as she will not hesitate to recommend the withdrawal of such grants if not used for their intended purpose.

/Goagoses made it clear during her recent state of the region address that government support through social grants is meant to cushion vulnerable members of society, not to fund alcohol or drug habits.

The number of social grant beneficiaries in Erongo has slightly increased compared to the previous financial year.

“These grants are lifelines. They feed children, care for the elderly, and support those living with disabilities. We must make sure they serve their true purpose. If I receive reports that these funds are being misused, I will recommend to the ministry that they be withdrawn. They are not meant for alcohol, drugs, or any other abuse. They are to improve livelihoods, not destroy them,” she appealed.

The number of pensioners receiving the old-age grant has risen from 15 456 to 16 779, while disability grant recipients increased from 3 738 to 4 526.

The funeral benefit also saw a significant rise in uptake, from 416 to 914 beneficiaries. The number of children benefiting from government grants grew from 12 277 to 13 047.

In total, the government has spent N$363 million on these social safety nets in the region.

/Goagoses said the grants form a critical part of the government’s broader poverty eradication agenda, but they must be respected and protected.

She will also establish oversight committees in all seven constituencies of the region to monitor how the grants are being utilised.

This, the former high education deputy minister said, is not just for accountability but also to restore dignity to communities.

“I will act if I receive evidence of abuse,” she said. She added that her office will also work closely with community leaders to ensure the grants are not only reaching the right people but are also making the intended impact.
