Africa-Press – Namibia. AFTER a three-year hiatus from netball, Trustco United Netball Club is ready to get back into the game.
Over the past few years health issues within the management team as well as Covid 19 contributed significantly to the club’s inactivity, but with a new management and coach on board, things are looking up for the club.
In a press release issued this week, it said that two former stalwarts of the club, Chantel van Tonder and Gloudi de Beer, who had previously both served as vice chairpersons, are returning to management positions, while a former player and coach, Schearita van der Merwe has been appointed as their team manager.
Another former player and coach, Enrica Farmer, who has also represented Namibia u21, has been appointed as United’s new coach. She has a fine record with the club, having taken their second team all the way to the top to win the second division in 2016, and has since been involved in coaching at Windhoek Gymnasium High School.
According to the press release, the club has a proud history of mentoring and developing young talent, with no less than five members of the Debmarine Desert Jewels who recently participated in the Africa Cup, having played for United during their school days.
They are Monica Gomases and Juzelri Garbers who are currently playing in South Africa, Nelandre Mosert who played in Hong Kong last year, and Zante Farmer and Jessica Moolman who were loaned out to Wanderers last year.
According to De Beer, national captain Nanguloshi Kamutushi is also a member of United, having been loaned out to Tigers last year, and currently runs the Tanshi Netball Academy at the club, which aims to foster the development of young players between eight and 16 with dedicated and individual coaching away from the school environment.
“United has been out of action for the past few years, but we want to take United to the top again. The entire United executive committee is starting from scratch so it will be a big learning curve, but we are very excited and looking forward to the new season,” De Beer said.
“The only match we played last year was the annual derby against Wanderers which we lost 45-28. I had to scrape a team together at the last minute so I was quite surprised that we managed to hold out so well against Wanderers,” she added.
Prospective players are invited to attend training which starts next Tuesday, 18 January at 18h15 at the Trustco United courts in Olympia. Practise days are on Tuesdays and Thursdays while player registration will take place at the courts. Players who would like to join the Tanshi Netball Academy can contact
